During her time in Oxford, England at the University Botanical Garden, Evans’ noticed shadows of branches moving across her open sketchbook. This prompted her to think about both the element of chance in art, and the act of consciously transforming a subject to create a kind of metamorphosis. Could there be a way to combine these two ideas? Photographing random pictures of the moving shadows, she saw the metamorphosis of plants turning into figures in an unpredictable drama. This series reflects Evan’s continued interest in the tension between the randomness of what the camera captures in changing light conditions with her desire to hold onto those fleeting images with their mystery intact.
