San Rocco

The series San Rocco (pencil and watercolor on paper) engages the paintings of Venetian painter Tintoretto (1518-1594). I first encountered Tintoretto’s paintings in Venice in 2013, and returned in 2015 to work on site to make sketches and watercolors. I am drawn to his extreme perspectives, open gestural marks and unpredictable rhythms through the interplay of lights and darks. In tension with the immediacy of his vision, a deeper sense of time emerges with compositional mirroring, mysterious sylphlike figures running in and out of spaces. (2015)
