The series San Rocco (pencil and watercolor on paper) engages the paintings of Venetian painter Tintoretto (1518-1594.) Evans first encountered Tintoretto’s paintings in Venice in 2013, and returned in 2015 to work on site to make sketches and watercolors. Drawn to his extreme perspectives, open gestural marks and unpredictable rhythms through the interplay of lights and darks, Evans materializes an immediacy alongside a deeper sense of time that emerges with compositional mirroring.
